After over four decades of serving comforting Teochew-style porridge and an extensive array of side dishes, Kheng Nam Lee Teochew Porridge at 715 Havelock Road is set to close its doors for good on March 20, 2025.
The beloved supper spot announced its closure via a Facebook post on March 9, expressing gratitude to its loyal patrons: “We want to thank each and every one of our valued customers for their loyalty and support over the years. We wish you all the best and appreciate the memories we’ve shared.”
Operating daily from 9 AM to 2 AM, Kheng Nam Lee was a go-to destination for supper lovers, night owls, and partygoers seeking a warm meal after a night out. The eatery gained a reputation for its wide selection of dishes—over 70 in total—including braised duck, pork trotter jelly, lor bak (braised pork belly), hae bee hiam (spicy dried shrimp sambal), and handmade Teochew fishcakes. Customers could enjoy these delicacies with either porridge or rice.
The restaurant even attracted the attention of international celebrities, with Hong Kong actors Andy Lau and Chow Yun Fatt among its patrons. Photographs of famous diners adorned the walls, adding to its nostalgic charm.
Although no official reason was provided for the shutdown, reports suggest that the owner’s decision to retire played a significant role. Other common challenges faced by long-standing eateries, such as rising rental costs, staffing difficulties, and declining foot traffic, may have also contributed to the decision.
In recent years, the decline of nightlife establishments in the area may have impacted the restaurant’s customer base. Once a popular post-clubbing destination, Kheng Nam Lee’s popularity seemingly waned alongside the nightlife scene.
News of the closure has elicited a range of reactions online. While many long-time customers expressed sadness over the end of an era, others were less sentimental, citing high prices and quality as reasons they would not miss the establishment.
