SOOD by Chef Ton Launches in Penang: A New Twist on Local Flavours

January 22, 2025

SOOD by Chef Ton officially launched in Penang, Malaysia. ‘Sood’ translates to ‘ultimate,’ and the restaurant delivers on this promise by providing an engaging dining experience that’s both fun and flavourful.

A Tribute to Penang’s Heritage and Culture

SOOD pays homage to Penang’s rich history and vibrant cultural landscape. The interior design team dedicated over six months to immersing themselves in the local scene, drawing inspiration from the historical vibrancy of Georgetown. This research has culminated in a restaurant concept that feels both familiar to locals and intriguing to international guests, mixing traditional elements with modern twists.

The menu at SOOD has been completely reimagined to suit the tastes of Penang’s diverse population. Chef Ton, together with his executive chefs and local culinary experts, has crafted a menu that merges global culinary trends with Penang’s distinct flavours, ensuring every dish offers something uniquely engaging.

Innovative Starters

A standout on the menu is the Thang Mo Pla Hang Caviar. This dish uniquely pairs watermelon with fish powder caviar, dried fish, Kristal caviar, and a light tomato consommé. It’s a playful yet sophisticated way to start your dining adventure.

Main Courses

Moving on to the main dishes, the Yum Pla Foo is an exciting choice. This crispy fish flake salad mixes apple, mango, and shallot with a tangy dressing, creating a delightful combination of flavours and textures. Another notable dish is the Pla Muek Yang with Sao Wa Rod Sauce. The grilled squid served with a passion fruit sauce offers a refreshing twist, perfectly balancing sweet and tart flavours.

A Culinary Visionary

Chef Ton, the visionary behind SOOD, has garnered significant acclaim, including his restaurant Le Du reaching the number one spot on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2023 list and earning a Michelin star for his innovative take on modern Thai cuisine. His culinary achievements and his journey can be further explored in the “Chefs Uncut” series available on Netflix and SBS On Demand, where viewers can delve into his inspiring story and his passion for Thai cuisine.

At SOOD, Chef Ton continues to push culinary boundaries while ensuring the dining experience is as enjoyable as the food is exquisite. His engagement with guests and passion for Thai culture add depth to the dining experience, making each visit not just a meal, but a memorable exploration of Thai culinary art.
