Have you tried Jungle yet? The new Thai grill and bar opened its doors on Ann Siang Hill in June, bringing a distinctive take on Thai cuisine to the Club Street neighbourhood. With an emphasis on exploring the depth of Thailand’s culinary landscape, Jungle presents a menu that taps into regional specialties through an assortment of carefully selected dishes.
The starters feature an Isaan Style Fish Laab with fresh herbs, which sets the tone for Jungle’s approach to traditional Thai flavours. Moving to the grill, the restaurant offers a variety of options including Southern Style Charcoal Grilled Chicken, Lamb Breast Skewer with Red Curry Glaze and Herb Salad, and Northern Hammered Beef Brisket accompanied by Galangal Chilli Relish. These dishes are prepared with a careful eye on authenticity, using high-quality ingredients and traditional cooking methods. Chilli lovers like ourselves can also ask for extra heat.
The curry selections at Jungle are robust, with dishes like Beef Panaeng Curry with Banana Chilli and Pickled Shallots, and Southern Crab Yellow Curry (damn good) with Wild Rice Shoots.
For dessert, Jungle serves a delicious Grilled Banana Cake topped with Gula Melaka Caramel and Coconut Ice Cream, a combination that complements the spicy and savoury elements of the menu.
Jungle’s drinks include a selection of house-made cocktails, an impressive wine selection, and a growing list of sakes and beers. The restaurant also accommodates vegetarians, though it’s recommended they book in advance to ensure the kitchen can prepare specialised vegetarian sauces and ferments from scratch. There are plans to incorporate these options more permanently into the menu in the near future.
The thing that makes Jungle extra special is the vibe, with a great playlist and down-to-earth yet attentive service. They even have occasional DJ nights, playing tunes out into the street, creating a mini-street-party vibe reminiscent of the pre-covid Club Street days.
Overall, Jungle’s approach to Thai cuisine is methodical and respectful of its origins, aiming to offer diners a genuine taste of Thailand’s diverse culinary regions.
The only downside is it’s called Jungle but isn’t even remotely like an actual Jungle WTAF.
